What to Bring

Fishing License - Every person fishing must have a fishing license before departure! Licenses can be purchased on the DNR website or by calling the DNR at (888) 665-4236. You can also buy licenses at local bait shops, Cabela's, and Fleet Farm. You don't need a full-season license. 24-hour licenses are available.
Appropriate Clothing - It's better to be safe than sorry so we recommend bringing a light jacket or hoodie. There is plenty of compartment storage on the boat to store items not used.
Rain Gear - If rain is in the forecast, we recommend rain gear. For smaller groups, we can provide rain gear for you upon prior request.
Snacks & Beverages - Coolers with ice and water are complimentary, but you are free to bring snacks and other beverages.
Sunblock & Sunglasses - Keep in mind that the sun can be intense when reflected off the water, even on cloudy days.

Lake Minnetonka Fishing Guide FAQs

Find answers to common questions about booking, preparing for, and enjoying your guided fishing trip with Erickson Guide Service.

The Fishing Experience

Lake Minnetonka is the biggest lake in the Twin Cities with over 14,000 acres. For comparison, the Minneapolis Chain of Lakes, which includes Bde Maka Ska (formerly Lake Calhoun), Lake Harriet, Cedar Lake, Lake of Isles, and Brownie Lake cover around 1,100 cares. Lake Minnetonka is over 12 times larger than all of those lakes combined!

Because of the size of the lake, it has all kinds of structure for a variety of fish. We've got tons of Largemouth Bass, plenty of Northern Pike, Smallmouth Bass, Walleye, Musky and some of the best panfish action around. Whether you're brand new to fishing or you've been at it for years, Lake Minnetonka has something for everyone. It's why Lake Minnetonka is THE fishing destination in the Minneapolis metro area and one of the more popular fishing destination in the state of Minnesota.

Kurt has been fishing Lake Minnetonka for over 25 years, and that's all he does - he doesn't run trips on other lakes. That kind of focus means he knows where the fish are depending on the season, the weather, the time of day, you name it. A lot of guides in the metro split their time between several lakes, but Kurt's "lake sense" comes from putting in decades on this one lake alone. His experience allows him to spend less time searching and more time catching fish when he takes his clients out on the water.

Absolutely! Kurt is known for being very patient and has a great sense of G-rated humor, making these trips perfect for families. Kids will have a great time!

We primarily target Largemouth Bass and Northern Pike, but we may catch Smallmouth Bass, Crappie, Sunfish, and even the occasional prized Walleye or Muskie.

Tips are always welcome but not required! If you choose to tip, the amount is totally up to you but the industry "standard" is 20% in case you're wondering. Some clients tip more, some tip less, and some don't tip at all. Again, it's totally up to you what, if anything, to tip. There is absolutely no pressure.

We welcome personal checks. We also accept Visa and MasterCard, which are subject to a 3.5% processing fee.

Preparation & Gear

In Minnesota, residents and non-residents aged 16 and older must have a fishing license. You can purchase 24-hour, partial and full-season licenses online through the MN DNR website. If you prefer to buy a license in person, most major sporting goods, hardware, gas stations, and bait shops in Minnesota sell licenses. A list of local places in your area can be found on the DNR website.

  • Clothing: We recommend layers, a light jacket, or a hoodie.
  • Sun Protection: Sunblock and polarized sunglasses are highly recommended.
  • Food: Feel free to bring snacks and beverages. We provide a cooler with ice and water.
  • Rain Gear: If rain is in the forecast, please bring a jacket (we can provide gear for smaller groups upon prior request).

Yes. We provide top-quality rods, reels, and lures. We generally have the most success with artificial lures, but when the conditions call for live bait, we provide that as well. You are more than welcome to bring your favorite "lucky" rod if you prefer, but we have everything you need to catch fish already on board.
