Lake Minnetonka Ice Fishing FAQs
Find answers to common questions about booking, preparing for, and enjoying an ice house rental with Erickson Guide Service.
Lake Minnetonka ice fishing is mainly about catching panfish. During the day you’ll catch mostly sunnies with the random crappie, and at night you’ll catch mostly crappies with the random sunny. It’s also possible to catch a random northern pike or walleye, but it’s rare.
Yes! Our ice houses are great for beginners because the fishing holes, rods, tackle, bait, depth finder, and underwater camera are already provided and ready to go. Kurt will also walk you through how to use everything, including how to drop your first line!
Absolutely! The heated interior, comfortable seating, television, underwater camera, and other amenities make the experience fun, easy, and enjoyable for the whole family. Kids particularly love fishing from inside a house. It’s a unique experience for them and parents alike.
The ice houses are private rentals rather than traditional guided fishing trips. The houses are located where the fish are biting, and everything needed to fish is provided, including rods, bait, tackle, a depth finder, and an underwater camera. Kurt will help you get familiar with the equipment and the ice house when you arrive and make sure all your questions are answered.
The underwater camera allows you to watch what is happening beneath the ice. You may be able to see fish approaching your bait, observe how they react, and identify fish moving through the area. It is especially entertaining for children, beginners, and anyone curious about what is happening below the surface. The cameras require light, so they can only be used during daylight hours.
Yes. Every ice house is equipped with forced-air heat, allowing you to fish comfortably even when outdoor temperatures are very cold. You should still bring warm winter clothing for the walk to and from the porta potty located just outside the ice house.
Yes. Each ice house has power from a generator for the heat, lighting, television, stereo, underwater camera, and other equipment inside the house.
A porta potty is provided just outside the ice house. The ice houses do not have conventional indoor plumbing or running-water bathrooms.
Yes. Each ice house includes a stovetop and oven that can be used to prepare meals or snacks during your rental. Guests need to bring their own food, beverages, cookware, plates, utensils, and other cooking supplies they may need.
Each of the four ice houses comfortably accommodates up to six people for fishing. The number of fishing holes varies by house.
All the ice houses except the Bellagio Lodge are available for overnight rentals. The Bellagio Lodge is only available for half-day rentals.
The White House, Black & Blue House, and Black Box can each sleep up to four people. Sleeping arrangements vary by house.
All four houses include the same essential fishing equipment and comfort features. Your choice will mainly depend on availability, sleeping needs, the number of fishing holes, and which interior layout you prefer. Kurt can help you select the best available house for your group when you call to book.
Each ice house is rented to your group for the reserved rental period. You will not be placed inside the house with another unrelated group.

Weekend dates can fill quickly, so reserving as early as possible is recommended. Availability also depends on safe ice conditions and the length of the Lake Minnetonka ice fishing season.
Absolutely, but specific houses are subject to availability. You should reserve as early as you can if you have a specific house in mind.
Yes, Minnesota residents and nonresidents age 16 and older need a valid Minnesota fishing license to fish. You don’t need to purchase an annual license. 24-hour licenses are available. You can buy annual or short-term angling licenses through the Minnesota DNR website. If you prefer to buy a license in person, most major sporting goods, hardware, gas stations, and bait shops in Minnesota sell licenses. A list of local places in your area can be found on the DNR website.

Even though the houses are comfortably heated, guests should dress appropriately for Minnesota winter conditions!
No. Crappie minnows, wax worms, and extra tackle are provided with every ice house rental. You may bring additional bait or personal tackle if there is something specific you prefer to use.
Guests staying overnight should bring sleeping bags, pillows, and any other personal bedding. The houses provide beds and sleeping spaces, but guests should arrive prepared with the bedding they need for a comfortable stay.
It depends on where the ice houses are located on the lake at the time of your rental. Ice house locations can change, so the meeting location may change as well. Prior to your rental date, Kurt will let you know where to meet him. If the ice isn't thick enough to support vehicles, Kurt will take you to your ice house in his side-by-side UTV.
Kurt is always just a call or text away. If something comes up that requires Kurt to stop by your ice house, he's usually on the lake already or at his home which is a stone's throw from the lake so he'll be able to respond quickly.
Yes. Ice house rentals offer a unique winter activity for company outings, customer appreciation events, team gatherings, families, and groups of friends. Each house comfortably fishes up to six people, and multiple houses may be used when availability and ice conditions permit.
Multiple houses may be available for larger groups, depending on the date, ice conditions, and existing reservations. Call Kurt with your expected group size so he can explain the available options and help coordinate the outing.
